South of France Road Trip: Saint-Rémy-de-Provence

Actual date of this event: 7 May

After Luke and I left the tiny city of Buisson, we didn't have a definitive plan. I marked down a few places that sounded interesting: Vaison-la-Romaine, L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, St-Rémy-de-Provence, Les Baux-en-Provence, Aix-en-Provence, and Arles. We decided we would head way far south with the goal of going to Les Baux, and stopping in St Rémy on the way. So destination St Remy it was... During the one hour drive, we continued to see some gorgeous countryside covered in vineyards. We took some very small back roads where we at point came up to a "road closed" sign, but instead of turning around, I got out and moved the sign, then drove on to discover there was no closed road. Hah!! We found ourselves a parking spot, which is never easy in these small towns, but the parking meter only gave us 20 minutes to explore. The race was on!

Thankfully 20 minutes was long enough for our visit. It was super small and quaint, had quite a few nice boutique shops, nice little cafes, and that is about it (maybe I missed some stuff?). For anyone who is a shopper, I think some major damage could be done in St Rémy, but as I have mentioned many times before, that's not our thing. The town was a little disappointing, not as charming as I had heard it was, so I sorta wish we could have chosen to visit L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue instead, but it gives us reason to go back to the South of France, right? Anyway, we hopped back in the car to vist Les Baux-de-Provence, and on the way, passed by the Roman Ruins of Glanum located just south of St Rémy. We decided not to stop, though, since we had one more destination for the day. On we went!
RANDOM FACT:
Vincent van Gogh was treated at a psychiatric center in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence where he painted the Saint-Paul Asylum series.
